Bed comforter- Bed-in-a-bag

A bed comforter is a soft lat bag used to cover the bed. The bag is filled with either natural material or artificial material. Usually a bed comforter is not used to cover pillows or box spring of bed. Preliminarily purpose is for decoration of bed. Bed comforters do not provide much warmth, unlike blankets. Large varieties of bed comforters are available on the market.

Comforters fill power

Fill power of comforter tells you how good the comforter is. Higher fill power means your comforter will last longer. The space occupied by one ounce of down in cubic inches is called fill power. If comforters fill power is 800 then it’s a superb quality comforter. If fill power is 700 or 600 then the comforter is excellent quality or good quality comforter. Before manufacturing fill power is tested by standard testing organization. One ounce of down is stirred in cylinder. The loft is measured and left alone to rest for 24 hours. After 24 hours down it is re measured and should regain its original position in 72 hours. One other method to measure quality of comforters is thread count. This method is counting the number of threads that are contained in one square inch of fabric. Higher thread count means the comforter is lighter and softer.

Types of bed comforters

Mainly there are two types of bed comforters, down comforters and feather comforters. Down is best insulation material. It is made up of light fluffy clusters. In filament of each culture tiny air pockets expands when heat is generated from body. While lifting away down has the wonderful ability of breath. An ounce of down will keep warmer than other synthetic fiber. Feather comforters are also soft and excellent at trapping heat.

Some people are having allergic problem with feather comforters. So now silk comforters are also available. Silk comforters are made from a combination of silk and hypo allergic material. Mulberry silk is used in best quality comforters. Mulberry silk is heavier than other silks. Cotton, polyester and wool are also used as filler in the comforters. Some comforters are made from both a mixture of down and feathers. Because of resilience, feather filling is better than down filling. A comforter filled with goose down can be used in winter.
