Heard about the saying curtain make a house a home? Yes its true. These days' curtains come in so many varieties at times we would find it hard to decide what we want.  Before shopping for the fabric and other materials do a bit of planning. You need to decide to on the design and colour choices. Though you may have some ideas of the style of the curtains, take time to look through your home style or interior decoration magazine or visit your friend’s home. These will giver you some inspirational ideas. Remember while shopping for curtain materials or getting your curtains stitched you need to have the vision of each room in your home. if you want to create a good and right atmosphere in a room you need to know the purpose and use of each room in your home. For instance the bedrooms need to look warm and soft, drawing room has to put on a formal but welcoming look and so on. You should have correct measurement for the window dressing too.

While choosing the fabrics for the windows always keep in mind the direction of the windows. If the room is sunny through out the day avoid using silk fabrics. If the room is dark and get very little sunlight use bright colours. Use fabrics with small patterns in small rooms. Choose colours in contrast with the wall paint and to reduce the impact of dark shades use light shaded frills or border.

Types of curtain patterns.

1. Pencil pleat curtains are used in dining rooms to make the room look cosy and warm.
2. Triple or pinch pleat curtains provide a need and at times a formal look. These curtains suit square and large windows. They can be used in the bedroom or in living rooms.
3. Tab top curtains hang from the pole and have no need for rings. The tabs are attached to the top of the curtain. The fabric must be strong enough to hold the weight of the curtains.


If you want to give bit more attraction and decoration to your window you can go for window dressing to match your curtains. Most commonly used dressings are valances and pelmet. Valances are more common as they are softer in appearance with a pleated heading whereas the pelmet is flat and usually has a shaped lower edge. These window headings can be used with various combinations of the curtains.
