» Gutters and downspouts
By Sheryl Cooper | Published 02/27/2006 | Gutters |
The purpose of gutter and downspout systems is to collect rainwater from the roof and direct it away from the building foundation by means of leader extensions, splash blocks, or underground drain lines. An improperly functioning gutter and leader system can contribute to water and ice backing up against fascias and under roof shingles, can damage soffits, and can discolor or deteriorate siding materials. Faulty gutters and leaders can also lead to soil erosion adjacent to buildings and serious water and foundation displacement problems in basements and crawl spaces. Unfortunately, gutter systems take more abuse from extreme weather conditions, particularly ice and snow, than any other component of the building envelope.

Gutters are the unsung heroes of all homes and exist for preserving the homes. They transport the rain falling off each facet of a roof and deliver it to such a place where it does not do any damage to the house. Even in the most arid of zones, homes must have some type of rain gutter. However, for the most part, they are a "walk by" component of the house. Gutters are available in various sizes and materials. Below are the details about copper gutters.
» Sarking gutters
By Sheryl Cooper | Published 02/25/2006 | Gutters |
The recommended material for use as Sarking is a Reflective Foil Laminate, which provides weatherproofing as well as insulation. It has a high reflection and low emission factors for low temperature radiation found within buildings. The Reflective Foil Laminate is a flexible sheet material, which is supplied as a roll. It is installed over the rafters, under the tile battens and has many benefits to offer when used under the roof covering. Sarking reflective foil insulation material should be a double sided. Using reflective foil laminate as a Sarking material is recommended because of its excellent insulating and weatherproofing properties. It has excellent water proofing qualities and when installed properly prevents damage occurring to ceiling materials and interior fixtures and fittings.
» Leaf proof gutters

Granted, a gutter isn't always glamorous. But it also handles a critical task of routing the runoff from a very large surface of the roof to proper drainage away from the house. By doing this, it keeps the house high and dry, protecting siding, windows, doors and foundation from water damage. Though most gutters are installed on existing roofs, adding them during re-roofing simplifies installation and allows them to be fully integrated into the roof system.
» Leaf guard gutters
By Sheryl Cooper | Published 02/25/2006 | Gutters |
Gutter guards are installed on rain gutters to prevent leaves, twigs and other debris from falling into the gutters and clogging the downspouts. Obstructed downspouts will prevent rain run-off and snowmelt from flowing through the rain-carrying system and away from the foundation. Water that cannot run freely can back-up and overflow the gutter causing damage to the landscaping and the foundation below. If water leaks behind the gutter, damage to the roofline and the fascia is a possibility. Gutter protection is a critical component of protecting the home from unwanted rainwater and dampness that can lead to a rotted fascia or roof boards. When water backs up in a clogged gutter it has nowhere to go but back over and down the outside wall of your home.
