Guyana is a country in the northeast South America on the Atlantic Ocean. The region of Guiana was settled in the early 17th century by the Dutch, who fought with the British and the French over the next two centuries for control of this coast. Awarded the western portion of Guiana in 1815, Great Britain established the colony of British Guiana in 1931, which gained its independence as Guyana in year of 1966. The largest city of Guyana, Georgetown is its capital. Guyana is an Amerindian word which means 'Land of Many Waters', and the country is characterized by vast unspoiled rain forests dissected by numerous rivers, creeks and beautiful waterfalls.
