Of the total surface area of the earth approximately 70% is covered by water. However this figure belies to the fact that there is a need to conserve water. This is because although 70% of the land surface area is covered by water most of this includes salty water which belongs to the oceans and seas. This water cannot be used for our daily and most basic purposes such as drinking, bathing and washing. Only a fraction of the total water on the earth is actually fresh water and can be used for the above purposes.
